Brief showers hit Lawrence on Friday; more rain likely this weekend

Brief showers crept over Lawrence on Friday, dropping less than a tenth of an inch of rain in the area, said Jenifer Bowen of the National Weather Service in Topeka.

An average of 6-hundredths of an inch of rain fell on Lawrence on Friday, Bowen said.

To date, Lawrence has seen 1.68 inches of rain in April, just behind the average expected amount of 1.83 inches, Bowen said. But scattered thunderstorms and showers in this weekend’s forecast likely will drive those numbers up.

“We’ll have showers with a few thunderstorms Saturday morning, moving east by the afternoon,” Bowen said. “And it will mostly be off-and-on showers and thunderstorms until it finally clears out Sunday evening.”

The beginning of next week will likely be dry, Bowen said, but new storm systems may move in around Wednesday.
