Bad weather forecast prompts cancellation of KU’s Big Event

The Kansas University Big Event, scheduled for Saturday, has been canceled because of a bad weather forecast, organizers announced Friday.

The annual volunteer event will be canceled altogether — not rescheduled — because, well, it’s too big.

“We have talked for hours about the service void this leaves for the community and are conscious of trying to address this in any way possible,” organizers said in a statement shared on their Facebook page. “However, due to the magnitude of the event, we will not reschedule this year.”

This year’s Big Event was expected to involve 3,600 volunteers — from KU and the community — volunteering at 311 job sites across Lawrence.

After receiving information from the National Weather Service over the past 24 hours, organizers had “a great deal of concerns,” the statement said.

Kansas Relays events set for Saturday also were called off and moved to Friday instead.

The National Weather Service on Friday issued a hazardous weather outlook for Northeast Kansas. On Saturday, strong to severe storms are possible with threats of large hail and damaging winds, according to the outlook.
