Museum to celebrate anniversary of ‘Dark Command’ with free screenings

The Watkins Museum of History will host a free screening of “Dark Command,” a 1940 Western starring John Wayne loosely based on Quantrill’s Raid in Lawrence, this Saturday.

The festivities, which also include a temporary exhibit on the museum’s third floor, commemorate the 75th anniversary of the film’s premiere in Lawrence’s Eldridge Hotel and Bowersock Opera House (now Liberty Hall) along Massachusetts Street.

Screenings will be at 10:30 a.m., 12:30 p.m. and 2:30 p.m. at the museum, 1047 Massachusetts St. Guests can enjoy free popcorn, and may come and go as they wish.
