25 years ago: Acting city manager appointed to permanent post

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for April 12, 1990:

  • Four months into a nationwide search for a new city manager, the Lawrence City Commission today named Henry Michael “Mike” Wildgen to the post. Wildgen was a 15-year veteran of Lawrence city government and had spent the past five and a half months serving as the interim city manager in the wake of the death of City Manager Buford Watson. City commissioners had met with Wildgen this morning in executive session before making the official announcement. Commissioners had voted 4-1 in favor of the hiring, with Commissioner David Penny casting the sole dissenting vote after expressing concerns about the hiring process.
  • Administrators at Kansas University this week issued a 24-page report outlining campus activities geared toward improving campus diversity. Highlights included an emphasis on diversity during the summer and fall student orientation programs and the hiring of 22 minority faculty and staff since October 1989.
