Kansas softball wins in extras

? Kansas University surrendered four runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to allow extra innings, but then scored five runs in the top of the 10th to claim a wild 11-9 softball victory over Texas Tech on Saturday at Rocky Johnson Field.

Leading 6-2 heading into the bottom of the seventh, the Jayhawks (33-6 overall, 4-4) gave up four runs to force extra innings.

The teams were scoreless for two frames until, in the top of the 10th, KU’s Maddie Stein drilled a three-run double, and shortly thereafter Chanin Naudin nailed a two-run home run for an 11-6 lead.

Tech (17-24, 1-7) scored three in the bottom of the 10th to make it interesting.

“Our offense chipped away and got some things going,” KU coach Megan Smith said. “We kept putting pressure on them, which I liked. Maddie was clutch with that hit, and Chanin was huge coming through with the home run to score two more runs in that inning.”

Alicia Pille (20-2) won with 31/3 inning of relief. She allowed three runs off three hits. She became KU’s first 20-win pitcher since Kara Pierce had 22 in 2001.

The rubber game in the series will be at 11 a.m. today.
