40 years ago: Former spelling champ makes comeback

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for April 11, 1975:

  • Central Junior High student Alison Gold spelled “vocabulary” correctly this week to win first place in the Douglas County Spelling Bee. Alison, 13, was a former state champion who had placed 25th in the national competition two years earlier. “I was a little nervous, but not as much as I was last time,” she commented after the county bee. Alison said she had stayed away from the 1974 competition because of the pressure. Her victory meant she would represent Douglas County at the state competition on May 3 at Washburn University.
  • James Ranz, acting dean of libraries at the University of Wyoming, was chosen this week to become director of libraries at Kansas University. He was to take the reins in mid-July, succeeding David Heron, who had resigned in June 1974. “We are exceptionally pleased that we have been able to fill this important position with a person we believe will bring outstanding leadership qualities and administrative abilities to our libraries,” said Delbert Shankel, KU executive vice chancellor.
