100 years ago: Health officer: Kill flies now, before they multiply

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for April 11, 1915:

  • “‘The swatting of the fly is a most praisable and exhilarating pastime at 102 in the shade, but better save your breath, your polite, expurgated profanity and exterminate the pest before it has a chance to multiply,’ says Dr. John Rudolph, health officer, in speaking of the bugbear of summer existence. The Sunflower is the emblem of the state chosen from the plant kingdom, but if Kansas were to choose an emblem from the animal kingdom Dr. Rudolph would cast his vote for the fly. He says that this state is unusually blessed on account of atmospherical conditions. ‘Now is the time to look after your screens. See that they are free from holes…. Well screened houses offer saving in doctor bills, undertaker’s sundries, milk and meat,’ says Dr. Rudolph…. But the fly is not the only danger to the health which is most active during the summer months. Dr. Rudolph brings our old friend the mosquito upon the carpet and charges him with equally as grave crimes against the public health. ‘The old-fashioned ague is due to nothing but a certain kind of mosquito, so when you have screened your houses, hauled away all refuse, and covered garbage buckets, do not forget to exterminate the larvae of the mosquito, who have their dwelling place in water barrels, standing pools, and old crockeries filled with water.'”
  • “On account of the fact that two cases of smallpox now exist in Lawrence Dr. Rudolph will vaccinate, without charge, all children who will come to his office between the hours of four and five. Dr. Rudolph is a strong advocate of vaccination. He states that during a residence of twenty-five years in Germany, a country that enforces strictly a requirement for vaccination, that he had no opportunity to study the disease first hand, no cases existing. He considers the vaccination a sure prevention of an epidemic which might grow from a few cases resulting in the possible loss of life and the loss of much money to the county and city.”
  • “The Walk which the people of North Lawrence have wanted for the past four or five years is now being constructed. The walk is being placed on Fourth Street North between Locust and Maple Street. It is being constructed by the Union Pacific. The walk leads to the school house and is the only means many of the children have of crossing the tracks as many of the other streets have no crossings. This walk will be a great addition to the approach to the school house and will be greatly appreciated by all who have to cross the tracks.”
  • “The City Commissioners met this afternoon with the city engineer and the city attorney in the matter of considering the extensions of the water mains of the city. The people turned down the proposed issue of $350,000 bonds for the purpose of building a new plant at the recent election and it is the intention of the commission to take the matter of the improvement of the present plant up with the receiver of the Water Company and see that the entire town is supplied with good water in an adequate manner.”
