25 years ago: Gas jumps to $1 a gallon at local stations

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for April 9, 1990:

  • Motorists were in for a surprise at local gas stations this week as prices at the pump were hitting $1 per gallon for the first time since the previous summer. A quick survey of self-service pumps on the city’s main streets showed prices ranging from 95.9 cents to $1.05.9 per gallon for unleaded gas. Several local service-station managers today said the increases were mostly due to supply and demand, with people driving more in the spring and summer. Scott Zaremba, co-owner of First Fuel Bank of Lawrence, 1500 E. 23rd, also cited a new state environmental tax designed to help clean up petroleum spills which had gone into effect April 1. Gas prices had been holding steady at about 87 cents a gallon in recent weeks. “I believe we’re going to move into the $1.10 to $1.15 range,” Zaremba said. “I think it will be stable there for the summer unless they have some major disaster.”
  • Lawrence postmaster Bill Reynolds said today he and his staff were preparing for the annual onslaught of taxpayers expected to flood the post office next week. The main office at 645 Vermont Street was to stay open until midnight on April 15 to postmark tax returns for last-minute filers. In 1989, about 2,000 individuals had taken advantage of the late-night hours, and Reynolds said he expected about the same number this year. Steve Mason, a member of both the Barnstorm Old-Time Cloggers and the Alferd Packer Memorial String Band, said the two groups would again be on hand this year to entertain weary taxpayers.
