United Way offering free online tax preparation for some households

For the second year in a row, the United Way and several of the organization’s partners are offering a free tax preparation service for some families.

My Free Taxes is a nationwide program established to offer low-income homes with a free tax preparation service, said Erika Dvorske, CEO of the United Way of Douglas County. Households making less than $60,000 each year are eligible to file their taxes for free.

Last year 400 people in Douglas County used the tax program, Dvorske said. So far this year only 265 people have taken advantage of the offer.

“We want the largest amounts of dollars going back into the hands of families as possible,” Dvorske said. “So if they can get their taxes prepared for free then that means they have more money to spend on their housing and groceries and everything else going on in life.”

Filing can be completed through www.myfreetaxes.com, Dvorske said. Options are available for those who are comfortable using their own computers and those who would prefer to use a local volunteer for help.

“There is a volunteer income tax preparation program available locally for folks who might not want to do it on their own,” she said.

Nationwide, nearly 200,000 people filed their taxes using My Free Taxes, Dvorske said. Through the end of March this year, around 144,000 people have taken advantage of the program.
