100 years ago: Sunny weather expected for Easter morning

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for April 3, 1915:

  • “Special Easter services will be held in all of the churches of Lawrence tomorrow. A strenuous effort has been put forth in preparing special music and programs for the services in celebration…. The weather man says no one need fear to put on his very best new clothes tomorrow for the weather prospect for a beautiful day was never better and bright sunshine may be expected for the entire day. The people of this part of Kansas have seen so little of the sun in the past month that they will all be out to enjoy the bright day.”
  • “The revision of the city poll books under the direction of the city commissioners was finished yesterday afternoon and the officials say that all names that are supposed to be on the books are there now and there is very little chance of anyone being overlooked as the books have been very carefully gone over since the last election. In the revision of the books it is found that there is a slight increase in the registration, the total at the present time being 5,144. This is slightly more than it has ever been before and is due to the enthusiasm in the election which will occur on Tuesday when the people of Lawrence vote on the candidates for mayor, members of the school board, pool hall ordinance and water bonds. Any of the four things that are to be voted on would poll a large vote but taking the four together it is expected that Lawrence will have a record-breaking election…. The women of the town are well registered and it is expected that they will be out in full force.”
  • “A union of the Commercial Club and the Merchants’ Association was favored by both the members of the special committee from the Club and by the executive committee of the Association, who met last night to consider a merger. A feeling exists among the members of both organizations that the object for which both stand and the work which both accomplish could be better carried out by a union of the two bodies.”
  • “Falling on the stairs from the jury room A. J. Parnell, court bailiff, dislocated his shoulder. The accident occurred yesterday afternoon. Mr. Parnell suffered severe pain from the fall.”
  • “Carl Graeber has been unable to be in his place of business this week on account of an attack of grippe. He is improving rapidly and expects to be able to resume his business cares at least by the first of the week.”
