40 years ago: April Fools’ storm brings wind, rain, sleet, snow, power outages to area

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for April 2, 1975:

In a delayed April 1st storm that was no joke, rain and thunderstorms overnight had turned to sleet and snow, dropping about an inch of snow and nearly that amount in other precipitation before noon today. “Every time we looked outside something different was coming down,” said Arnold LeBombarb, state Highway Commission maintenance foreman. Ice and winds had brought down power lines at 15th and Engel Road just after 3 a.m., causing blackouts in the Jayhawker Towers apartments and in Hashinger Hall. A falling tree on West 21st had resulted in blackouts in about 60 homes. In addition to several other pockets in Lawrence, power outages also occurred in parts of several nearby towns, including Tonganoxie, Oskaloosa, DeSoto, and Eudora. At least two major accidents had also resulted from the icy conditions.
