Cans for the Community issues recycling challenge for Lawrence

Cans for the Community, a local nonprofit organization, is issuing an aluminum can recycling challenge to the people of Lawrence.

Since its creation in 2005, Cans for the Community has recycled over 10 million aluminum cans and donated more than $153,000 to local charities, the organization said in a release.

Now, Cans for the Community is challenging Lawrencians to donate 5,000 pounds of cans in the month of April, double the average amount of monthly donations, the release said.

All of the money from donations will be distributed between the Lawrence Public School District’s four middle schools and two high schools, the release said. As such, Cans for the Community is also challenging each local student to recycle one pound, or around 33 cans, this month.
