Today in Lawrence: Final Friday, KU Homecoming, Cinema A Go-Go, book sale

The KU Homecoming parade and pep rally, with comedian Rob Riggle serving as grand marshal, will be at 6 p.m. on Massachusetts Street downtown. A pep rally will follow the parade at Eighth and New Hampshire streets.

Summer holds on

This weekend couldn’t be lovelier. Today’s high is expected to be 84 degrees under sunny skies; Saturday, expect much of the same, with a high of 83. Sunday may have a few more clouds, but still no chance of rain, and a high of 84. Lows each night will be around 58 degrees with clear skies. Enjoy warm days for play and cool nights for fire pits and stargazing!

Final Friday!

It’s the last Friday of September, everyone, and you know what that means — arts and more arts throughout Lawrence. From one end of Massachusetts Street to the other; in the Warehouse Arts District; in North Lawrence; and even on the KU campus, the monthly Final Friday puts the spotlight on the arts in Lawrence. See the listing below for all the galleries, eateries and retailers who are open and celebrating Final Friday.

Exhibits at LAC

Two exhibits are featured for Final Friday at the Lawrence Arts Center: Paper|Plate, a ceramics and drawing group exhibition curated by Kyla Strid, features a plate and drawing from over 30 artists from various parts of the United States. Russell Wrankle’s “New Work” exhibit opens today with a reception at 5 p.m. Wrankle, from Toquerville Utah, unfolds a personal narrative that utilizes familiar animal figures. Russell’s work has been shown in galleries around the United States. LAC is at 940 New Hampshire St.

‘Hawks coming home

The annual KU Homecoming Parade will take place at 6 p.m. on Massachusetts Street in downtown Lawrence. Theme-based floats, vehicles and banners from various student groups will participate. The parade will be led by the Marching Jayhawks and this year’s grand marshal, Rob Riggle. A pep rally will immediately follow the parade at the corner of Eighth and New Hampshire streets. All KU students and the Lawrence community are invited to attend.

Films: The bug genre

If movies are more of the kind of art you’re interested in, check out Cinema A Go-Go tonight at Liberty Hall. The films that are screening are “Them!” (1954), in which atomic testing in the New Mexico desert spawns a nest of giant, bad-tempered ants, and the desert crawls in “Tarantula,” (1955) where a tiny desert town is besieged by a plus-sized creepy crawler. Film starts at 7 p.m. at Liberty Hall, 644 Massachusetts St.

Saturday: Last day for book sale

Please join the Friends of the Lawrence Public Library for the last day of the first fall book sale!
