Saddle club to hold 60th anniversary celebration Saturday

The Douglas County Trail Riders group is celebrating 60 years as one of the most active saddle clubs in Kansas on Saturday at its grounds west of Lawrence.

Doors open at 5 p.m. for the anniversary celebration, which is being held at 816 North 1750 Road. A dedication for the recently renovated outdoor arena takes place at 6:30 p.m. Dinner starts around 7 p.m.

The Douglas County Trail Riders was founded in 1954 by a group of area horsemen who originally met at Collins Ranch (now underneath Clinton Lake). In 1968, the club purchased its grounds, which now include an outdoor arena, crow’s nest, concession stand and clubhouse. The group built the rodeo arena at the Douglas County Fairgrounds and formed the Kansas State Horse Show Circuit. The club also supports 4-H, advocates for the preservation of horse trails in Kansas and holds a variety of activities and competitions throughout the year.
