Twitter re-enactment of Quantrill’s Raid to be honored this week

The American Association for State and Local History will honor Freedom’s Frontier National Heritage Area and Lawrence community partners for their 2013 social media event marking the 150th anniversary of Quantrill’s Raid, #QR1863: A Collaborative Twitter Re-enactment of Quantrill’s Raid.

The #QR1863 event was a Twitter-based, real time re-enactment of Quantrill’s Raid, one of the worst Civil War-era raids on civilians, on its sesquicentennial, Aug. 21, 2013 in Lawrence.

The AASLH will also honor the Kansas City Public Library for its website, Civil War on the Western Border: The Missouri-Kansas Conflict, 1854-1865. Freedom’s Frontier collaborated with this project, as well.

The projects received the AASLH Leadership in History Award of Merit, the most prestigious recognition for achievement in the preservation and interpretation of state and local history. A total of 77 national awards will be presented.

The Twitter re-enactment also received the History in Progress Award, which is given to 5 percent or fewer of the total Award of Merit winners.

The AASLH will present all awards at its annual meeting in St. Paul, Minn. through Saturday.
