Brothers bar brawl ends in two arrests, one taken to Lawrence Memorial Hospital

Two people were taken to the Douglas County Jail and another to Lawrence Memorial Hospital after a brawl outside It’s Brothers Bar and Grill, 1105 Massachusetts St., Saturday morning.

Around 1:15 a.m. Saturday, a Lawrence police officer responded to a disturbance on the sidewalk outside of Brothers after a 20-year-old woman battered a doorman, Sgt. Damon Thomas of the Lawrence Police Department said.

Upon arrival, officers encountered a large group of people, some of whom were actively fighting, Thomas said. As the woman was placed under arrest on suspicion of battery, her 22-year-old boyfriend began to interfere with officers, Thomas said.

As the man was interfering, he battered an officer and was placed into custody on suspicion of obstruction of the legal process and battery on a law enforcement officer, Thomas said.

As police were outside Brothers, they discovered another battery victim near the bar, who said an unknown man punched him, Thomas said. The victim was then taken to LMH with injuries to his face and head, Thomas said.

While the Lawrence Police could not confirm the names of the suspects, the Douglas County Jail booking log shows a Desarie Florenda Taylor, 20, of Overland Park, booked into the jail on suspicion of battery after being arrested in the 1100 block of Massachusetts at about 1:16 a.m. Saturday.

The booking log also shows an Alfred Henry Belton, 22, of Kansas City, booked into the jail at 1:39 a.m. on suspicion of battery of a law enforcement officer, obstruction of the legal process and criminal damage to property after being arrested at 1105 Massachusetts St., the location of Brothers.

The name of the battery victim taken to LMH has not been released by police. His condition is unknown at this time.

The incident is under investigation as officers review video surveillance from the front of the bar, Douglas County dispatch said.
