Body of man found near Kansas River Aug. 31 identified as 57-year-old Lawrence resident

Lawrence police remove a body of a male subject from a culvert located in Burcham Park and between the railroad tracks and the Kansas River. The body was discovered Aug. 31.

Lawrence police have identified the body of a man found dead near the Vermont Street bridge over the Kansas River last month as 57-year-old Mark Kemberling of Lawrence.

Two people discovered Kemberling’s body face down in the water of a small creek south of the Kansas River in Burcham Park on Aug. 31, Lawrence Police Department spokesman Trent McKinley said.

Crime scene investigators responded just after 2 p.m. that day, and the body was transported to the coroner’s office for an examination, McKinley said.

The identification of the man was delayed because of the decomposition to the body, which had likely been there for some time, McKinley said.

Autopsy results may not be available for several weeks; however examination of the scene where Kemberling was found did not indicate any sign of foul play, McKinley said.

Anyone with information regarding this investigation is asked to call the Lawrence Police Department at 832-7509 or CrimeStoppers at 843-TIPS(8477).
