Westar Energy warns of fraud attempts

Westar Energy is encouraging customers to be cautious if they receive a call or visit from someone claiming to be from Westar trying to collect money.

The Topeka-based energy provider has received reports that the fake callers are using technology to manipulate caller IDs so the fake collection calls appear to be from Westar, the company announced in a news release Tuesday. Westar said it has also received word of an impostor entering businesses and claiming to be from Westar. The individuals usually claim payment by prepaid credit card is required right away or electric service will be turned off.

Westar noted a few ways customers can protect themselves against the scammers. First, stop and look online to see if your account is current. Second, ask for an employee ID; all Westar employees will readily show you their employee badge. Third, give Westar a call at 800-383-1183 and ask if the company has called you or sent an employee to your location.
