KU slips a few notches in U.S. News & World Report ranking of best colleges

Kansas University slipped a few notches in this year’s U.S. News & World Report college rankings.

The often-cited report, released Tuesday, ranked KU in a tie for 106th among national universities, which is down from 101st last year.

KU was tied for 50th among public universities, down from 47th last year.

In the rankings for national universities, KU was tied with Iowa State University, Loyola University Chicago, Oklahoma University, Oregon University, San Francisco University and Tennessee University. Among public institutions, KU was tied with Iowa State, Oklahoma, Oregon and Tennessee.

Despite the slight overall fall, KU’s schools of business and engineering continued to climb.

The School of Business went from 36th to 31st among public university programs and the School of Engineering went from 45th to 41st.

“It is an exciting time for both Business and Engineering, with both schools expanding and creating new facilities to educate students who will be leaders in their fields. This national recognition only adds to that excitement,” said KU Provost Jeffrey Vitter.

The business school ranking puts KU’s school second in the Big 12 behind University of Texas.

“We are laser-focused on job placement for our students,” said Neeli Bendapudi, dean of the School of Business.

She said this year, 73 percent of the business school’s undergraduates had jobs the day that they graduated, up from 63 percent the prior year.

As far as the overall ranking, Vitter said the school would prefer to go up but added, “we’re focused on metrics directly related to student success, such as how many students progress and earn degrees. Students becoming graduates is central to our mission of educating leaders, and if we improve in this and other aspects of our mission, then the rankings will follow.”

In the national universities category, Kansas State was ranked 142nd among all schools and 74th among public institutions.

National universities are those that offer a full range of undergraduate majors, plus master’s and doctoral programs.

U.S. News gathers data from each college on up to 16 academic indicators.

Princeton University was the top-ranked national university, while University of California-Berkeley and University of California-Los Angeles were ranked Nos. 1 and 2, respectively, among public universities.
