Handcuffed suspect ran onto Turnpike, escaped troopers

A handcuffed man who ran onto the Kansas Turnpike before heading for the grass, jumping a fence and escaping Monday was still at large Tuesday afternoon.

If authorities do catch up with him, they’ll probably be serving him with an arrest warrant for driving under the influence, Kansas Highway Patrol Lt. John Lehnherr said.

Lehnherr said a trooper conducted a traffic stop about 5:50 p.m. Monday in the westbound lanes of the Turnpike near mile marker 191, about 10 miles west of Lawrence. The trooper took the driver, who was suspected of being intoxicated, into custody and handcuffed him.

“At some point the driver fled on foot, running into the lanes of traffic,” Lehnherr said. “Obviously, for safety reasons, the trooper didn’t follow him.”

The Highway Patrol’s helicopter as well as personnel from the Lawrence Police Department and Douglas County Sheriff’s Office searched the area for about two hours but did not find the suspect, Lehnherr said. He said the Highway Patrol was sending its report to the district attorney’s office to consider charges.
