Denver ? Kansas University senior outside hitter Sara McClinton recorded her 1,000th career kill as the Jayhawks opened the Pioneer Volleyball Classic with a straight-set victory over Bradley on Friday.

KU (3-1) beat the Braves, 25-15, 25-19, 25-20.

“I thought we played well in the first set and were pretty uneven through sets two and three,” Kansas coach Ray Bechard said. “Our passing wasn’t as crisp as we want it to be, and we credit Bradley for some of the things they were doing. We did do some really good things late in both sets two and three to close it out.”

McClinton had just five kills Friday. The final one was her 1,000th, and it put KU up, 20-18, in the final set.

“That’s really cool. Sara didn’t have her best match tonight, but she was still driving hard and taking heavy swings,” Bechard said. “That milestone is a testament to a really solid career, and now we hope she piles up a whole bunch more on top of that.”

Senior Chelsea Albers led the floor with 12 kills and five blocks, tying her with Janae Hall for the team lead at the net. Making her first start of the year, Hall added six kills to her blocking effort. Freshman outside hitter Madison Ridgon set the tone with a .444 attack percentage, rapping out 10 kills on 18 swings. Ainise Havili ran the offense from the setter position, tallying 37 assists. Sophomore libero Cassie Wait bested the floor with 17 digs.

Bradley fell to 0-4.

KU will face Sam Houston State at 11 a.m. today in the tournament’s second round.
