Letter: Proud of Lawrence

To the editor:

My wife and I retired and moved to Lawrence about a year ago and we’re delighted with our decision. We were reminded of that on Aug. 23 when, as volunteers for Just Food, we and other volunteers were at four area grocery stores (a HyVee, Checkers, a Dillon’s and a Walmart), handing out flyers and encouraging customers to buy food and drop it in the barrels we had stationed at the exits.

The people of Lawrence could not have been nicer — or more generous. In six hours they collectively bought and gave us a total of more than 2,200 pounds of food. One volunteer told of a woman donating food with tears in her eyes, saying how much Just Food had helped her when she had fallen on hard times. Many parents gave the food to their little sons and daughters who shyly dropped it in our food barrels. (What a wonderful lesson for those kids.)

Yup, we made the right decision.
