Group seeks input on how to rewrite city-county long-range plan

Lawrence and Douglas County residents will get a chance to weigh in on local growth and planning issues at two upcoming forums.

The city and county will host a pair of forums as part of the process of rewriting Horizon 2020, the long-range plan that guides growth, development and other planning issues in Lawrence and the unincorporated parts of Douglas County.

The first forum will be from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the Lawrence High School cafeteria, 1901 Louisiana St. Members of the 10-member steering committee studying Horizon 2020 will ask for comments on four specific topics:

• downtown Lawrence issues;

• quality housing for all incomes;

• maintaining agricultural uses in Douglas County;

• growth management.

The second forum will be from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Nov. 12, also at the LHS cafeteria. The group is asking for comments on:

• creation of employment opportunities;

• retail development issues;

• parks and recreation and open space;

• arts and cultural amenities.

The 10-member committee, which is led by Lawrence Mayor Mike Amyx and Douglas County Commissioner Nancy Thellman, will present a report to the Lawrence City Commission and the Douglas County Commission on ways that Horizon 2020 could be rewritten.

The final decision on how Horizon 2020 will be changed will come from the city and county commissions in the coming months.
