25 years ago: City officials say no to downtown trolley

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Oct. 31, 1989:

  • A consensus was apparently reached this week on the question of a downtown trolley. The Lawrence City Commission, meeting in a Monday afternoon study session, decided that spending $150,000 for a replica trolley car to run between downtown and the new Riverfront Mall wasn’t a good idea at this time. Commissioners opted to have city staff investigate other options — such as leasing a trolley car or contracting with the Jayhawk Bookstore for use of its British-style, double-decker bus — to provide the transportation link.
  • Two Larned State Hospital psychologists this week testified that a man accused of killing a 9-year-old Lawrence boy last summer was mentally competent to stand trial in spite of his serious mental and emotional problems. Both staff psychologist Robert Huerter and chief psychologist Dr. Charles Befort testified that they had determined John William, 28, was competent to stand trial based on personal examination and information from other hospital staff members.
