40 years ago: Decision nears on city garage location

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Oct. 27, 1974:

Lawrence city officials were hoping to soon reach a conclusion on the location of a city maintenance garage site. The final report on the garage was to be presented in early November by consultant Ken Kallenbach of the Oblinger-Smith Corp. Lawrence Mayor Jack Rose said he was planning to limit public debate on the subject at the early November city commission meeting, saying he wanted to give commissioners time to discuss it and wanted to attempt to take a vote on each site. “I don’t know if we have enough votes to locate it,” Rose said, “but at least I want to get the commission o record on each site.” The commission needed a four-vote majority to locate the garage at any site except the one at 23rd and Learnard, the site recommended by the city-county planning commission. A four-vote majority was needed to override the planning commission. The sites recommended were 19th and Haskell; Second and Indiana; 12th and Haskell; Second and Minnesota; and 23rd and Louisiana.
