Douglas County reports strong advance voting

With more than a week left before the Nov. 4 general election, voter turnout in Douglas County is going strong and is on a pace to exceed advance voting in each of the last two mid-term elections.

According to a website that County Clerk Jamie Shew is maintaining, nearly 4,000 Douglas County voters had already cast advance ballots as of Saturday. That includes 1,767 who voted in-person at the county courthouse, plus 2,164 who had returned their ballots by mail.

Shew said about 200 voters per day have been showing up at the county courthouse to cast ballots in person, about double the pace of the past two mid-term elections.

Douglas County recorded a little more than 6,000 advance ballots in the 2006 and 2010 mid-term elections. So far this year, the county has already mailed out 5,173 ballots to voters who have requested them.

Voters can cast advance ballots in-person at the county courthouse, 11th and Massachusetts streets, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Starting Monday and continuing through Friday, advance voting locations will be open from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. at the Douglas County Fairgrounds, Kansas University Multicultural Resouce Center and the Brandon Woods Smith Center

In-person voting is also available from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at the county courthouse and Lecompton, Baldwin City and Eudora city halls.
