LHS soccer blanks Shawnee Heights

The Lawrence High soccer team capped its regular season with a 2-0 win over Shawnee Heights on Senior Night, Thursday at LHS.

The 14 seniors played a large role in the Lions’ victory, as Jared Roush scored LHS’ first goal and Andrew Ornburn recorded his second straight shutout.

Roush put Lawrence High on the board with 12 seconds to play in the first half when he scored on a free kick from just outside of the 18-yard box.

“I just felt it right before I kicked it,” Roush said. “That’s our main thing we practice really. Before practice or games, we’re usually shooting it. I’m glad I got that one.”

Roush’s goal came two minutes after the Thunderbirds positioned themselves to take the lead, but Ornburn stepped up to the occasion. Shawnee Heights’ Blake Cheatham had an open shot on goal, but Ornburn denied him.

“Even in some of the games that we’ve lost, he’s played well,” LHS coach Mike Murphy said of Ornburn. “He made a fantastic save tonight.”

Lawrence High tacked on an insurance goal with 24:31 remaining as Piper Hubbell sent a header past Shawnee Heights goalkeeper Tyler Zentner.

“The ball was kind of bouncing around in there. I think Matt (Mantooth) kind of chipped it and got a piece of it,” Murphy said. “It was pretty high, so the keeper kind of had to tip it a little bit. We’ve just talked with guys about when that ball gets inside that (6-yard box), it’s just a matter of want to.”

The Lions appear to have that “want to” heading into the 16-team northeast regional tournament. Murphy believes that the Lions will probably play on Tuesday.
