40 years ago: School board seeks architect for LHS, West expansions

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Oct. 24, 1974:

  • The Lawrence School District 497 Board of Education was soon expected to select an architectural firm for proposed expansion at Lawrence High and West Junior High. Members of the board and district administrators were to interview six firms, three of them local, as part of the selection process. The architect would be reviewing the work of district subcommittees which had recommended the expansions the previous spring for physical education, fine arts, and vocational education.
  • Movies showing in Lawrence theaters this fall included “The Gambler” with James Caan, “The Groove Tube,” Burt Reynolds in “The Longest Yard,” Peter Finch and Liv Ullmann in “The Abdication,” and “Phase IV,” with the tagline “When You Can’t Scream Anymore.” Hungry locals could buy two hamburgers and two little bags of crispy fries for one dollar at Sandy’s, 2120 West Ninth. Taco Tico, 2340 Iowa, was advertising that every Tuesday was Family Night, with the “Big Burrito” available for 39 cents, tacos for 24 cents (or five for a dollar), and all regular size drinks five cents (with the purchase of food).
