FSHS golfers struggle to 10th at state

Free State High golfer Karen Campbell tees off during the 6A state golf tournament Monday, Oct. 20, 2014, at the Topeka Country Club golf course.

? Free State High’s five senior girls golfers had hoped to dominate play in the last act of their high school golf careers at the Class 6A state tournament on Monday afternoon.

However, it wasn’t in the cards, as the Firebirds struggled with consistency and finished 10th among 12 teams at the Topeka Country Club.

Senior Karen Campbell led the Firebirds by shooting a 93 and taking 22nd place. She had trouble putting throughout the day, but improved on the front nine, her last nine holes, as she was able to land several approach shots onto the green.

“On the last couple of holes, I was getting kind of sentimental because I was like, ‘This is the last time I’ll hit my driver as a high school golfer,’ and all that,” Campbell said. “I wouldn’t trade this experience for the world. It’s awesome.”

Senior Emily Bermel, who finished second in the Sunflower League, struggled to land on the narrow fairways with most of her drives and found the thick rough was much more challenging than she expected.

“I’ve kind of been in my head for the last week or two knowing that this is my last tournament, and I tend to always do pretty poorly at state,” said Bermel, who shot a 95. “I was like, ‘Maybe let’s go out with a bang,’ and I kind of psyched myself out and just didn’t play well.”

Bermel shot par on the first two holes, before it “went downhill from there.” It was frustrating for her and the other Firebirds as their day veered from how they hoped.

“Usually I can handle myself pretty well, but there were tears flowing through a good amount of the tournament,” Bermel said. “I was pretty mad with myself, but toward the last hole, I was kind of like, ‘OK, let’s finish, and we’ll be done,’ but it was frustrating.”

Seniors Savannah Reeb and Sydney Buller shot a 115 and 132, respectively, while sophomore Anne Goebel shot a 125.

Though there were no end-of-the-season fireworks they were hoping for, they were glad make the trip to state as a team.

“I know they’re disappointed in the way they played,” FSHS coach Layne Meyer said. “But it shouldn’t take away from a great year.”
