Free State spikes LHS at Emporia

? The Free State volleyball team beat Lawrence High on Saturday at the Emporia tournament, defeating the Lions in three sets 15-25, 25-14, 25-22.

Free State went 4-2 overall on the day for a fifth-place finish. The Firebirds’ three other wins came against Pittsburg, Leavenworth and Emporia.

Paige Corcoran highlighted the tournament for the Firebirds defensively with 40 digs, while Sydney Moreano and Naomi Hickman combined for 48 kills to set the tone offensively.

Lawrence High picked up its lone win of the day against Junction City, coming from behind to win 21-25, 25-12, 25-20.

The Lions were led by Caroline Dykes with 34 kills and 12 service aces and Nicole Owens with 49 digs.

The Firebirds will take on Blue Valley West and Topeka High on Tuesday, while the next match for the Lions will be against Free State on Thursday at LHS.
