40 years ago: East Lawrence residents push for public hearing on land acquisition

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Oct. 15, 1974:

East Lawrence opponents of the proposed Haskell Loop were planning to petition the Lawrence City Commission for a public hearing on land acquisition for the project. Forty names had been obtained on a petition to be presented to commissioners demanding a hearing on the use of $80,000 in Neighborhood Development Funds to obtain right of way for the loop along the 800 block of Pennsylvania Street. The group of residents was questioning the legality of using NDP funds for highway construction. The Haskell Loop had been proposed to connect the U.S. 59 bypass, east of Lawrence, with the downtown area. The final location of the loop was yet to be determined, but it was certain that the 800 block of Pennsylvania Street was to be affected. City commissioners had approved the $80,000 for acquisition of the properties a month previously.
