Elite guard to decide early

Kansas University basketball recruiting.

One of the five senior blue-chip high school basketball players who attended last Friday’s Late Night in the Phog definitely will be signing with a school in November.

Tyler Dorsey, a 6-foot-4 shooting guard from Maranatha High in Pasadena, California, who is ranked No. 19 in the Class of 2015 by Rivals.com, said he’d like to make his final decision after visiting Arizona State (this weekend) and California (Oct. 24). He’s already visited Kansas University, Colorado and Oregon.

“Coach (Bill) Self shot it straight to me. We talked about how he sees me if I decided to go to Kansas and just how everything works at Kansas,” Dorsey told Jayhawkslant.com. “I really like the atmosphere at Kansas and I like what coach Self had to say to me during our visit. The campus life is great and Kansas is obviously a great basketball program. I’ve never seen anything like Allen Fieldhouse before. It was pretty wild and crazy,” Dorsey added.

The other four seniors to attend Late Night — No. 2 Jaylen Brown, No. 10 Stephen Zimmerman, No. 14 Carlton Bragg and No. 18 Brandon Ingram — figure to announce for a school in the spring.

Maker may reclassify: Seven-foot Thon Maker, the No. 1 player in the recruiting Class of 2016, still might wind up in the Class of 2015.

Ed Smith, who is Maker’s guardian, tells the Louisville Courier-Journal that Maker will decide during second semester if he’ll reclassify so he can attend college during the 2015-16 school year before entering the 2016 NBA Draft.

“I wouldn’t say it’s a lean thing (one way or the other),” Smith told the Courier-Journal. “If you’re physically ready and have finished your core (academic) work, you can move up, but there’s no need to rush in terms of this whole thing.”

Maker attends Athlete Institute in Ontario. The school shares facilities with the Brampton A’s pro basketball team. Smith works as a scout for that organization.

Smith told the Courier-Journal that KU, Kentucky, Indiana, Stanford, Missouri and Maryland were recruiting Maker the “heaviest.”

Smith said KU’s Self has been the coach “most present” during recruiting thus far.

Withey update: Former KU center Jeff Withey, who battled foot and ankle injuries this past summer, is off to a slow start for the New Orleans Pelicans during the 2014-15 preseason.

The 7-foot second-year pro had 10 points and 10 rebounds combined in the first two games. He had zero points and zero boards while playing just two minutes in a 106-94 win over Houston on Tuesday night after not playing in the Pelicans’ third exhibition contest.

Withey is in a battle for the team’s backup center spot with Alexis Ajinca and Patric Young. Starter is Omar Asik.

“Jeff has had his moments,” coach Monty Williams told the New Orleans Times-Picayune. “We want him to play with a bit more force. The thing that he did last season to close out, he was a rim (protector). He was diving hard in pick-and-rolls. There were times when Jeff dove down the lane and dunked on guys when they didn’t expect it.

“A lot of that was due to he was in great shape. He wasn’t dealing with any injuries. He dealt with some injuries this summer, his ankle and some other nagging injuries. But he has done a decent job. And I know he wants to play a lot better.”

Withey averaged 3.3 points and 2.6 rebounds in 58 games his rookie season. In his final 10 games he averaged 8.1 points, 3.9 rebounds and 2.3 blocks.

“I just need to be solid,” Withey told the Times-Picayune. “Coach isn’t looking for somebody to go out there and score 20 or anything like that. That’s not what he wants from any of the guys. He just wants us to be solid, rebound, play defense.

“That’s one thing I feel like I haven’t been doing a great job of, defense. I feel like I lose my man sometimes. And that’s just getting refocused into the game. In the summer you don’t really play that great of defense. You just have to get back into that mindset. That’s the big thing for me, defense, know who I am guarding and the assignments and know if the ball comes to me, I have to get somebody open or score, do the right thing.”

Black scores five: Former KU center Tarik Black, who is trying to make the Houston Rockets’ roster as an undrafted free agent, had five points and four rebounds in 22 minutes versus the Pelicans on Tuesday. He hit two of four shots and one of two free throws.

Media Day beckons: Today is Big 12 Media Day in Sprint Center in Kansas City, Missouri. Coaches and players from all 10 league teams will be on hand to discuss the upcoming season. The event is closed to the public.
