40 years ago: Geological survey reveals no changes in cost estimate for new Kaw bridge

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Oct. 13, 1974:

  • A geological survey for the proposed new Kansas River Bridge in Lawrence would cause no revision in the estimated project cost, according to consulting engineer John Frazier of Finney and Turnipseed. Frazier said that as a result of the study, conducted by Barneett-Stuart Consulting Geologists, Topeka, the location of one pier in the preliminary drawings would have to be changed. The report further noted that the limestone at the site was “extremely dense and hard” and that it would be difficult to excavate by normal means, so blasting was probably going to be required. Frazier said those difficulties had been anticipated when the cost estimate was prepared, however.
  • Voters in Eudora this week approved a bond issue for a new library by a vote of 319-176. The request was for the authority to raise not more than $90,000 through the issuance of township general obligation bonds for construction of a new library on land immediately behind the fire station.
  • A strong-arm robbery at the Sunset Drive-in Theater this week netted the robber about $66 cash. An unidentified man had approached box office attendant Deborah J. Farley as she had been leaving the office with the evening’s receipts. The man had instructed Farley to be quiet and then had grabbed three bags of money and escaped.
