25 years ago: Overnight fire destroys truck, damages house

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Oct. 9, 1989:

Lawrence Fire Department investigators today were searching for the cause of a fire that had caused $25,000 damage to a local residence and had destroyed a pickup truck that had been parked in the driveway. Fire Chief Jim McSwain today said the fire had started near the front of the truck, which had been parked a few feet away from the garage at the residence at 1533 Maryland. McSwain said the fire had destroyed half of the garage and caused heavy damage to the roof, the attic, and the living room of the one-story house. The home’s owner, Lisa Sparkes, said she had been asleep with the fire started. “I heard a loud noise — a boom,” she said. “And it just kind of shook the whole house.” After hearing another boom and smelling smoke, she went to the door and was met by a man who told her her house was on fire. Sparkes said she had then grabbed her dog and left the house.
