40 years ago: Tons of dirt brought to Clinton Dam construction site

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Oct. 8, 1974:

  • With only a minor delay caused by the previous weekend’s wet weather, construction work on the Clinton Dam was on schedule. Project engineer John Jepson said the work on the entire dam was about 55 percent done, with a completion date set for September 1976. A front-page photo today showed large diesel trucks bringing tons of landfill to the dam site, to be smoothed over by bulldozers. Over nine million cubic yards of dirt were to be required to finish the 9,250-foot-long, 114-foot-high structure.
  • A natural gas explosion this week had destroyed the Accurate Telephone Secretarial Service Co., 612 Massachusetts Street. One of the women injured in the blast remained hospitalized today at Watkins Memorial Hospital. Representatives from the city fire and police departments today said they were planning to further investigation into the blast, but that they would check any new information brought to their attention.
  • Kansas University enrollment had passed the 20,000 mark for the first time and had exceeded earlier estimates by KU officials. The combined Fall 1974 total for both the Lawrence and Kansas City campuses was 22,182, according to figures released this morning by the Kansas Board of Regents. Lawrence enrollment was 20,395, an increase of 9.2 percent over the previous fall.
