25 years ago: KU dedicates new science library

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Oct. 8, 1989:

  • Exactly two years after the beginning of its construction, Kansas University’s Marian and Fred Anschutz Science Library celebrated its dedication on Oct. 7. The library had been named in recognition of a $6.5 million gift to the university from Philip and Nancy Anschutz to support library acquisitions. “This will be the largest endowment fund ever established for library acquisition at a state university,” Chancellor Gene Budig said. “The Anschutz gift will enhance the quality of KU for many, many years.”
  • Lawrence city commissioners, accompanied by two city administrators and a management consultant, were spending time in Overland Park for a 24-hour retreat this week. The agenda included a goal-setting session to look at the “big picture” for Lawrence. “We deal with things on a weekly basis on a level extracted from the whole fabric of the community,” Mayor Bob Schumm said. “We deal with a retail question here, a sidewalk problem there, sporadic questions about growth. What I hope comes out of this is an overall philosophy of what we want our community to be like.”
