Lawrence will be hosting the NAIA 2014 Cross Country National Championships on Nov. 22 and the preview meet on Saturday. The preview meet needs volunteer course marshals from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. The championship meet on Nov. 22 needs volunteers from 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Please contact Bob Sanner at the Lawrence Convention and Visitors Bureau with questions or to volunteer at 785-856-5302 or at sports@visitlawrence.com.

The Lawrence Alliance, a city advisory board, will be hosting the annual Festival of Cultures in South Park on Oct. 12. Volunteers are needed for a variety of tasks, including setup on the evening of Oct. 11, as well as tasks on Oct. 12, noon to 5 p.m. Volunteers can email ccolbert@lawrenceks.org or aschwegs@ku.edu, for more information.

Lawrence Meals on Wheels provides hot meals to the homebound elderly and/or disabled residents of Lawrence. Lawrence Meals on Wheels is preparing for its annual charity auction on Oct. 17. Volunteers are needed to help staff the event: greeters, check-in and check-out, auction closers and more. The Lawrence Arts Center provides arts programs and services. The Center’s Costume Shop needs volunteers to sort, tag and sell items during the Trunk Sale on Oct. 25. Please contact Erika Gray at erika@lawrenceartscenter.org or at 785-843-2787.

The Friends of the Library supports the operations of the Lawrence Public Library. The organization needs volunteers to assist with several upcoming book sales. Tasks include greeting, restocking and straightening books and assisting shoppers. Sales dates include Oct. 30-Nov. 1, and Nov. 28-29. AARP Tax-Aide provides free income tax assistance for taxpayers with low to moderate income, with special attention to residents 60 and older. Volunteers are needed to help prepare and file individual tax returns next season. Volunteers should have basic computer skills and a willingness to learn the necessary software. Volunteers are provided all computer equipment and training materials and will receive comprehensive tax training in January. Tax preparation will begin Feb. 2 and run through April 15.
