40 years ago: Parking tickets to increase in price, but meters to stay unchanged for now

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Oct. 3, 1974:

The cost of overparking in downtown Lawrence was going to double in the near future. The Lawrence City Commission this week authorized city staff to prepare an ordinance increasing the price of a parking ticket to $1 for the first 24 hours, $2 after 24 hours, $4 after 15 days, and $8 after 30 days. The increase was intended to bolster the city’s parking system operating fund, which paid for all parking enforcement and lot maintenance. The commission, however, deferred a decision to convert the present parking meters by eliminating the one-cent slot and adding a 25-cent slot. If the changes were made, time on the meter would still cost 10 cents an hour, but a quarter would only purchase 20 cents’ worth. Lawrence City Manager Buford Watson explained that the quarter slot would be a convenience for those who did not have exact change. Watson said the city could adapt the present meters, rather than replacing them, as replacement would cost an estimated $13,000 for all 422 meters.
