100 years ago: Thanksgiving holiday to include church services, help for poor

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Nov. 25, 1914:

  • “The annual Thanksgiving services for Lawrence will be held tomorrow in four places instead of one as has been the custom in the past…. There will be a collection taken at each of these meetings and the money raised will go to help the needy of Lawrence through the Social Service League. There have been a number of calls for help at the Social Service Hall this year and they are not prepared to handle all that have applied for help. The officers of the Social Service League have a better opportunity of seeing the need of help among the citizens of Lawrence and have often said, ‘Let us not forget the people at home in our enthusiasm over helping the Belgians.'”
  • “The Board of Administration finished its preliminary work on the University budget late yesterday afternoon and adjourned…. Nothing has been determined yet, as the sessions on the hill the last two days have been merely for the purpose of investigation. Consequently, the findings are subject to change and revision before the final report is submitted December 5. However, Chancellor Strong declared this morning that the board seemed very favorably inclined toward the University, and that this year’s budget would probably exceed the appropriation asked for two years ago by between $100,000 to $250,000. As the old board of regents asked for $1,917,423 in 1912, this year’s budget will probably ask for a sum slightly over two million dollars to keep up the University during the next two years. This increase is due to the larger enrollment and the general advancement of the University…. Whether or not the administration building will be completed or any new structures built has not been decided upon by the board yet.”
  • “The Journal-World will be prepared tomorrow to give reports of the games that will be of interest to the people of Lawrence. Reports at the end of each quarter will be sent explaining the play and the score of the Haskell-Oklahoma game at Kansas City. A special reporter has been sent to Beatrice with the Lawrence High school team and he will send reports after each quarter telling how the game is going. Everyone interested in these games is invited to call the Journal-World office at any time and they will be given the reports as far as they have been received. A report will also be given of other games that are played in the east and middle west later in the afternoon.”
  • “The Lawrence men who went out to Albert Walters’ farm yesterday for the annual rabbit hunt report the very best of good times and a good hunt. There were fourteen men who went out from town. Dinner was served to the hungry hunters at noon. The bunch report that they killed about 110 rabbits the most of which were ‘Cottontails.'”
