25 years ago: Winter wheat ahead of schedule

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Nov. 24, 1989:

Harvesting of the state’s corn, soybean, and sorghum crops was almost finished and the winter wheat crop was growing faster than it had in the past, the state’s official crop reporting agency said this week. According to Kansas Agricultural Statistics, 99 percent of the state’s corn crop had been harvested, as had 99 percent of the sorghum crop and 98 percent of the soybeans. KAS also said 98 percent of the winter wheat crop had emerged, 3 percent more than at the same time the previous year and 89 percent more than the average for the past five years. “Although dry weather helped push harvest along, lack of moisture was a concern in many areas, especially where wheat needs to establish good growth before winter,” the report stated.
