25 years ago: KU Jayhawks feast on UNLV

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Nov. 23, 1989:

  • The Kansas Jayhawks were enjoying a very good week, having beat No. 2-ranked Louisiana State 89-83 on the previous Friday and then dominating the top-ranked University of Nevada this past Wednesday. KU had been ahead 42-38 at halftime of the Thanksgiving Eve game in the preseason NIT at New York City’s Madison Square Garden, and had ended up winning 91-77. “We have intelligent players with basketball savvy,” said KU coach Roy Williams after seeing the Jayhawks shoot 60.7 percent.
  • Volunteers today carved up more than 250 pounds of turkey and served the bird with all the trimmings to more than 200 people at the free Thanksgiving dinner sponsored by the Lawrence Interdenominational Nutrition Kitchen, or LINK.
