25 years ago: Neighborhood group dials down noise ordinance proposal

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Nov. 19, 1989:

  • The Lawrence Association of Neighborhoods said they were toning down their proposed city noise ordinance. Representatives of LAN, a consortium of neighborhood groups, were planning to meet with the Lawrence City Commission this week during a study session. In response to concerns city officials had raised over their original proposal, the LAN members were now pushing for adoption of a “disturbing the peace” ordinance. City officials said the new proposal was more promising than the original, but the student body president at Kansas University was still critical of the proposal, saying it was “aimed against the students.”
  • Lawrence High School fans were jubilant this week as the LHS Lions captured the Kansas 6A state football championship at Kansas University’s Memorial Stadium, reclaiming the trophy they had lost to the same team the previous year. “This is our senior year and we’re going out in style,” said Karen Griffo, a 17-year-old senior, following the 28-21 win over Manhattan High.
