Fire officials: Smoking materials caused Ohio Street fire

Lawrence-Douglas County Fire Medical investigators have determined that improperly discarded smoking material caused the fire Wednesday at an apartment complex at 1224 Ohio St., Division Chief Eve Tolefree said Monday.

The two-alarm blaze caused nearly $200,000 in damages and displaced the building’s residents, Division Chief Sean Coffey said. None of the residents were physically harmed, but many lost nearly everything to fire and smoke damage.

The fire victims are asking for the public’s help to replace lost possessions.

Isaiah Mazurek’s family has created an online fundraiser. Mazurek, who had no renter’s insurance, is on Social Security disability and “has no funds to replace his lost possessions,” family member Pat Fucile said.

So far, $3,785 has been raised. Fucile hopes to raise $7,000.

The Kansas University student newspaper, the University Daily Kansan, also is asking the community to help KU student and fire victim Ben Carroll replace what he lost.

Journalism school Assistant Dean Barbara Barnett said Carroll, who covers women’s soccer for the Kansan, “lost everything.”

KU student photographer George Mullinix began a campaign last week selling prints of his photographs for $25 to raise money for Carroll. According to the YouTube page showing Mullinix’s work, 36 prints have been sold

Mazurek’s dog, Potato, appeared in news photos last week, and pet lovers have reached out to help him, too. Hills Pet Nutrition is donating grain-free food for Potato, who has has a corn allergy, said Katy Ibsen, chair of the Lawrence Human Society board. The humane society is donating medicines to prevent fleas, ticks and heart worm, a rabies vaccine and a dog coat for winter, Ibsen said.
