Thirteen NBA teams were represented at the season opener between the Jayhawks and Gauchos, won by Kansas University, 69-59.

“Twelve NBA scouts watched us practice yesterday. I told our guys, ‘They are not here (in Lawrence) to see you. They are here to see the big fella.’ He’s a terrific player,” Self said of 6-8 Santa Barbara senior Alan Williams, who had 22 points, 13 rebounds and four blocks.

“He weighs about 265 pounds. The longer you play the game, the slower the game becomes,” Self said. “If you watch, he would get pressure, he would post up, hops to the ball, and then waits for the ball to be in the scoring area, and then he would post up.

“He had 14 points with about four minutes left. We did a pretty good job on him for the most part until the last three minutes. But he’s good. He’s got touch and if he gets to his left shoulder, which we let him way too much, he’s great at creating space by just a little bump. He backs you down and creates a little bump. And it takes away your jump. We’re not big enough to play behind him. He’s good. I can understand why there’s a lot of NBA teams that came to watch him tonight.”
