40 years ago: One killed, four taken hostage in Sanctuary robbery

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Nov. 13, 1974:

A Kansas University student was dead as the result of an apparent confrontation with a robber early this morning at the Sanctuary Club, 1402 W. Seventh, and four persons who had been seized as hostages after the shooting had gained their freedom. Assistant County Attorney Doug Walker said a man had entered the club at about 3:41 a.m., more than half an hour after legal closing time, and had demanded money. When escaping, he had taken two female club employees at gunpoint and an undetermined amount of money before fleeing south through a wooded area behind the club, apparently coming upon two men in the parking area and taking them hostage as well. Witnesses at the club, who asked not to be identified, said they believed the KU student had been killed when he had refused to follow the robber’s instructions to lie face down outside. The witnesses said they had heard a gunshot at that time, but they were not certain whether a shot had struck the student or whether he had been beaten. The robber had reportedly announced his original intention to take several hostages until the club’s owner, Harrison (Ace) Johnson Jr., could be found to open the safe, but could not find a car large enough to accommodate them all. At some point, the robber had apparently changed his mind and had made his escape with the four hostages, who had later been released from their captivity in Topeka after one of the women had managed to free herself and had run to a warehouse to call police. This afternoon, officers of the Lawrence Police Department, the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office, the Kansas Highway Patrol, and Kansas University Security and Parking were participating in the investigation. Lawrence Police Chief Richard Stanwix said the Federal Bureau of Investigation had also been notified of the incident in anticipation of the robber’s crossing state lines.
