25 years ago: Lawrence area enjoys summer-like weather

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Nov. 13, 1989:

Lawrence area residents were treated to unseasonably warm weather this week as temperatures climbed to record heights. The high on the previous day had been 76 degrees, two degrees above the former record set in 1944 and tied in 1971, according to records kept by the Kansas University Weather Service. Mark Bogner, forecaster for the KU weather service, said this morning that recent warm temperatures had been the result of the jet stream staying farther north than normal for this time of year. Although the summerlike weather was pleasant for outdoor activities, Bogner said, the dry, hot conditions were not what the area needed right now. “As close as we are to coming out of a drought, it’s not good to be setting record high temperatures,” he said. “The area could use some moisture.”
