Bitter cold, possible snow coming next week to Douglas County

Monday may be your last chance to soak up the warm days of fall before a bitter cold front enters the Douglas County area, bringing frigid temperatures and a chance of snow.

Bill Gargan, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Topeka, said temperatures Monday will be in the 60s to low 70s during the day, but as night falls, an arctic front will roll in, dropping temperatures to 30 degrees by Tuesday morning.

More bad news: Strong winds accompanying the front could make it feel more like the mid-20s.

“It will be a drastic change, and it looks cold for the remainder of the week,” Gargan said Saturday evening.

The National Weather Service is predicting more cold and dry weather Wednesday through Friday, with average temperatures hovering in the 30-degree range, before moist air brings a 25 percent to 30 percent chance of precipitation Saturday, Gargan said.

In other words: snow.

“This could be the area’s first chance of seeing snow” this winter, he said. Gargan said it’s too early to say whether the snow will amount to any significant accumulation, if it falls at all.

As for those cold temperatures? Gargan said they probably will stick around until almost Thanksgiving.

“It looks like it’s going to be cool for a while,” he said. “We are going to be in it through the 18th or 20th of November.”
