100 years ago: Round Corner offering ‘tobacco cure’

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Nov. 7, 1914:

  • “Do the boys of this town want a tobacco cure? They can get one free at the Round Corner Drug store on Monday afternoon from 1 to 7 o’clock. This is a new remedy that is given to all boys under 18 years of age free of charge. The cigarette habit has grown to wonderful proportions in this town the last few years and if this new cure will do the work it ought to be tried. The Journal-World is glad to give this notice free for the purpose of influencing the boys of this town to get this new cure. They certainly need it and certainly ought to be man enough to make an effort to cure themselves…. There is no doubt but that the citizens generally of Lawrence and vicinity will gratefully appreciate this offer on the part of the Round Corner Drug Store in going to this expense in bringing to this city the free distribution which will give all the young men and boys of this community a chance to rid themselves of the tobacco habit.”
  • “The new boiler for the University heating plant arrived yesterday and work began immediately on removing it from the railroad yards to the university. The boiler came from the Topeka Boiler Works. The university officials did not want to take the chances of the old boiler carrying the pressure through this winter. The boiler is a large affair and will be clumsy to move.”
  • “County Attorney J. S. Amick has set the cases for the first three days of the District court which will start on Monday of next week. There are more liquor cases on the criminal docket than any other cases. One of these was brought over from the last term of court on account of a hung jury.”
  • “Today is the day that tests whether Kansas is to have a never defeated team this year. If Washburn downs the Jayhawk gridiron heroes, and there is grave belief for defeat, with a second team playing, in order to hold for the Nebraska game, that will end all chances. But Kansas is in no uncertain mood. The Jayhawk looks for victory, even with a second line team, over Gray’s Ichabods. Offense and defense has been strengthened by a week of hard work since the tie game with Oklahoma.”
  • “The absent vote in Douglas County was probably larger than in any other county in the state. There being 40 votes cast that have had to be mailed to the various counties over the state. County Clerk Herman Brocker was busy yesterday getting the vote mailed out. The official count of the books began yesterday and it will probably be finished some time today.”
  • “SIX LIVES LOST – Chickens Burned in Their Coop. – Fire caused by sparks from a trash burner burned the chicken house belonging to W. B. Dalton at 627 Connecticut street this morning at 10:30 o’clock. The fires had a good start before it was discovered and the building was an entire loss. There was no insurance.”
  • “The first free day at the Y. M. C. A. proved a great success. There were about 82 new boys enjoying the privileges of the Y. M. C. A. who had never been there before…. This has proven a very successful project and will be continued for those who do not always have the opportunity to enjoy the Y. M. C. A.”
