Lawrence man airlifted after car crash along Highway 59

A Lawrence man had to be airlifted to Kansas University Hospital Wednesday evening after an animal in the roadway led to a two-vehicle accident on U.S. Highway 59 in Douglas County.

Fernando De San Miguel, 68, was northbound on Highway 59, about two miles north of U.S. Highway 56, when he came upon the animal, according to a report from the Kansas Highway Patrol.

De San Miguel’s vehicle slowed to avoid the animal, but a car behind him, driven by Peyton Ellyn Williams, 21 of Garnett, did not slow and rear-ended De San Miguel’s car, the report said.

The collision caused De San Miguel’s car to enter the median and roll one time. He was not wearing a seatbelt and was ejected from the vehicle, according to the KHP.

An update on De San Miguel’s condition was not available from hospital officials Wednesday.

The crash occurred shortly after 6 p.m. Williams was not injured and had her seatbelt fastened.
