40 years ago: Lawrence voters undeterred by chilly weather

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Nov. 5, 1974:

  • Lawrence voters this morning appeared undeterred by the chilly, overcast weather as they turned out in record numbers at today’s off-presidential year election. The Journal-World’s noontime check of the city’s 29 polling places showed just over 6,500 voters had cast their ballots. The heavy turnout appeared to be general across the state as Kansans showed up to mark their ballots for a U.S. senator and a new governor.
  • Rain over the weekend had brought to a standstill the harvest of fall crops, according to the Crop and Livestock Reporting Service. The harvest had been moving steadily but steadily ahead during the week despite intermittent rain, but as of the previous Saturday, the sorghum grain harvest was only 35 percent complete, compared with 55 percent at this time the previous year. Soybeans were 45 percent harvested, well below the average for the date of 75 percent. However, the corn crop was described as 70 percent complete, compared with the average of 65 percent.
